Truck Accident Statistics

Holding Trucking Companies Accountable

Tractor-trailers deliver goods from outside the city, delivery vans maneuver through our narrow streets, sanitation trucks pick up trash and salt snow, street cleaners wash the roads and service trucks make calls to costumers. ConEd, Time Warner and construction companies are constantly building and repairing buildings, roads and highways throughout the five boroughs and the surrounding suburbs. These commercial vehicles are a necessary, but dangerous, aspect of our economy. Every year numerous pedestrians, bikers, motorcyclists and motorists are injured and killed by negligent commercial drivers and corporations.

Northeast has High Rate of Truck Accidents

A report by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), states more than 8.12 million single-unit trucks, 2.47 million tractor-tailors and 864,000 buses were registered in the United States in 2013. Large trucks accounted for 275.0 billion vehicle miles travelled (VMT) and buses reached 15.2 VMT. More than 532,000 commercial vehicles carried hazardous materials.

The Northeast region is the busiest commercial corridor in the country. Unsurprisingly, the Northeast, including the New York City metropolitan area, also has the highest number of commercial vehicle crashes.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that of the more than 30,000 fatal crashes on American roadways in 2013, more than 3,800 (12.7 percent) involved at least one heavy truck or bus. The same year, approximately 5,657,000 nonfatal crashes occurred nationwide, with 385,000 (6.8 percent) involving a large truck or a bus. These statistics reflect the deadly nature of most truck and bus accidents.

Violations of Commercial Drivers

The FMCSA regularly inspects commercial vehicles for safety violations. In 2013, the FMCSA inspections most frequently uncovered these violations by commercial drivers:

  • No log or an out of date log
  • Hours of service violations
  • Speeding
  • Failing to use a seat belt
  • Expired or absent medical certificate
  • Failure to obey traffic light
  • False log report
  • Use of a handheld phone
  • Lane change errors
  • Operating without the appropriate license

In addition, the FMCSA also most frequently reported hazardous vehicle violations, including faulty lights, brakes and tires and leaking oil and grease.
