Motorcycle Crash Numbers
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles reports 5,190 motorcycles crashes in New York in 2013, killing 157 drivers, 9 motorcycle passengers and 5 pedestrians and resulting in injuries to 4,434 drivers, 456 passengers and 127 pedestrians, bicyclists and others. Of the total motorcycle crashes, almost half were considered serious to moderate.
The highest number of motorcycle crashes happened on the weekend. Men were the motorcycle operators more than five times as often as women and had a much higher rate of accidents, personal injuries and deaths. The 25 through 29-year-old age bracket accounted for 15 percent of the motorcycle crashes, making this the largest age group to be involved in a bike wreck and to be killed or injured as a result.
The primary reasons for the crashes included:
- Driver distractions
- Alcohol use
- Driver inexperience
- Tailgating
- Speeding
- Improper turn
- Unsafe lane change
- Aggressive driving
- Failure to yield
In many cases, motorists do not see motorcyclists, or simply do not look out for motorcyclists, as they have a duty to do. Distracted driving, failing to yield and not responsibly changing lanes can contribute to an accident if the biker is in the motorist’s blind spot,” which is a misnomer if motorists obey the rules.
