6th Precinct
The 6th Precinct services the West Greenwich Village area. Washington Square Park is located in the center of the precinct. The Washington Square Park Arch was erected to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of George Washington being elected president. The campus of New York University surrounds the Park and is visited by tourists, residents and students daily. The 6 th Precinct has a large gay and lesbian population and this community within a community has established both the Gay and Lesbian Community Center located at 208 W. 13th Street and the Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project located at 647 Hudson Street for the service of all residents in regards to outreach, help and understanding. Many of the bars and small clubs made famous during the sixties’ folk music scene can be found on or near Bleeker Street.
