NY Vehicle Accidents Statistics 2007
- There were 323,106 motor vehicle accidents in the state of New York in 2007, including roughly 183,000 accidents resulting in property damage and 139,000 resulting in personal injury. There was approximately 1 injury caused by motor vehicles for every 100 residents of the state of New York. A total of 1,220 fatal accidents resulted in 1,317 deaths.
- The accident total for 2007 includes 15,701 collisions with pedestrians, 5,535 collisions with bicycles, and 5,426 motorcycle accidents.
- Approximately 0.5 percent of vehicle accidents in 2007 were fatal. Another 4.3 percent resulted in serious injury.
- The highest proportion of accidents, 21.6 percent, occurred between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Accident rates were also high from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Accident rates were highest on Fridays, representing 17.1 percent of accidents, and lowest on Sundays, with 11.5 percent.
- Most traffic accidents in 2007, 73.1 percent, were reported to involve some human factor. The most common human factors contributing to a crash were distracted driving (17.4 percent of accidents), failure to yield right of way (14.7 percent), following too closely (14.4 percent), and unsafe speed (12 percent). Slippery pavement was a factor in 11.7 percent of accidents.
- The majority of drivers involved in accidents, 57.2 percent, were male. Males also made up 72.5 percent of the drivers involved in fatal accidents. Persons in their 20s made up a high percentage of drivers involved in fatal crashes, as well as representing 20.5 percent of those who were injured or killed.
- Statistics on safety equipment use clearly demonstrate the dangers of traveling without protective equipment. Over half of the 50 bicyclists who were killed in New York in 2007, 29 individuals, were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Over 23 percent of fatally injured motor vehicle occupants were not using a restraint of any kind. Only 3.2 percent of vehicle occupants in all crashes were not wearing a restraint.
