Medtronic Neurostimulation
Neurostimulation is a form of pain therapy used by thousands of people suffering from chronic back and neck conditions. Medtronic Neurostimulation Systems are used by many, but a number of models have recently been associated with adverse events including: jolting or shocking; hematoma, epidural hemorrhage, paralysis, seroma, leakage, infection, allergic response, hardware malfunction or migration, not to mention the surgical risks.
Neurostimulation is used to treat pain associated with different chronic conditions including: Failed Back Syndrome (FBS), Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), Epidural Fibrosis, Postlaminectomy pain, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), and arachnoiditis. The treatment is also used on patients who have had multiple, unsuccessful back operations.
Neurostimulation treats these various conditions by delivering tiny electrical impulses to the spinal cord or targeted peripheral nerve. An implanted lead (a flexible insulated wire), which is powered by an implanted battery or by a receiver, is placed near the spinal cord. This lead and an implanted neurostimulator send electrical impulses, blocking pain messages to the brain. Neurostimulation treatment works to mask the sensation of pain, it doesn’t remove pain or heal the body.
There are two forms of Neurostimulation Systems offered by Medtronic – one that is surgically implanted and 100% internal, and another that has both internal and external components. The stimulation a patient receives is controlled by an external programming device. The implanted device may be felt as a small bulge under the skin, but does not normally show through clothing. Both devices have reported adverse effects.
Medtronic Neurostimulation Warning
Patients receiving Medtronic Neurostimulation for pain treatment have reported the following; undesirable change in stimulation, jolting or shocking; hematoma, epidural hemorrhage, paralysis, seroma, CSF leakage, infection, erosion, allergic response, hardware malfunction or migration, pain at implant site, loss of pain relief and excessive chest wall stimulation.
