Overview of Hospital: Established in 1911 as the New Utrecht Dispensary, Maimonides Medical Center underwent various mergers and transformations before being named in 1966 after Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, a 12th-century philosopher known as “Maimonides.” Over the last 100 years MMC has practiced Maimonides' philosophy of "treating the patient, not the disease."
Maimonides offers a full range of inpatient and ambulatory services. Maimonides especially focuses on the beginning and end-of-life treatment of patients, and on medical emergencies. Maimonides Medical Center delivers more babies than any other hospital in New York State. A quarter of Maimonides patients are over the age of 75 and tend to be much sicker than those hospitalized elsewhere.
Maimonides Medical Center is one of the largest independent teaching hospitals in the United States. With 23 residency programs, Maimonides trains more than 400 medical students and residents every year and is the largest physician training program in Brooklyn. Maimonides is also devoted to educating patients, families, employees and the communities.
Maimonides is a 700-bed hospital employing over 6,200 healthcare professionals. MMC primarily services the Brooklyn sections of the Borough Park, Bensonhurst/Bay Ridge and Sunset Park.
Specialties: Maimonides Medical Center is known for the following achievements and medical services:
- US News & World Report has ranked Maimonides Medical Center among the nation’s “Top 50 Hospitals for Respiratory Disorders,” according to its 2009-10 publication of “America’s Best Hospitals.” Only 174 medical centers nationwide made the rankings in one or more categories.
- In 2007, HealthGrades ranked Maimonides Medical Center among the top 5 percent of US hospitals for stroke, cardiology and critical care services, #1 in New York State for cardiology, and excellence in pulmonary services.
- In 2001, Maimonides was the first U.S. hospital to use robotic surgery for pediatric patients. Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to use computer imagery to guide robotic arms during surgery, far more precisely than those of a human hand. Today, robotic surgery is employed in a wide range of procedures.
- MMC’s Stroke Center is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at Maimonides Medical Center provides a multidisciplinary approach, utilizing wound care services that focus on the needs of patients with chronic, non-healing wounds of the extremities.
