Overview of Hospital: For more than 100 years, Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center has provided quality health care to those in need. The Bronx Hospital was established in 1889, followed in 1909 by the Lebanon Hospital. After years of operating separately the two hospitals merged forming the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in 1962.
Since that time, the hospital has focused on serving the Bronx community and fulfilling the hospital’s mission of community service, and offering residents the finest medical care facility. In 1987 “New Directions,” a multi-million dollar modernization replaced an aging physical plant, with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as a specialized and innovative long term care facility. In addition to New Directions, numerous other major initiatives were launched for the public including education, housing, nutrition, and medical outreach programs.
Bronx-Lebanon is the largest voluntary, not-for-profit health care system, serving the South and Central Bronx, with 958 beds at two major hospital divisions. The Hospital center includes a major psychiatric facility, two specialized long term care facilities, and an extensive network of 70 medical practices, including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center.
Bronx-Lebanon provides free health check-ups and screenings at schools, shelters, nursing homes, senior citizen centers, churches, and many other community organizations. In addition, many outreach programs have been initiated to educate the community about important health issues. HealthBeat, Bronx-Lebanon’s widely acclaimed weekly live television show, was established to offer viewers the opportunity to have their questions answered by medical experts.
