New York Alcohol-Related Crash Statistics ‘07
- In 2007, there were 9,480 alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents in the state of New York. This includes 4,145 property damage accidents, 4,991 personal injury accidents, and 344 fatal accidents resulting in 373 deaths.
- Alcohol-related crashes in 2007 included 403 collisions with pedestrians, 97 collisions with bicycles, and 217 motorcycle crashes. There were 62 pedestrian deaths and 7 deaths of bicyclists which resulted from alcohol-related crashes. There were also 362 pedestrian injuries and 90 bicyclist injuries. Of the 373 persons killed, 215 were drinking drivers.
- Approximately 0.5 percent of all motor vehicle accidents in New York in 2007 were fatal. In comparison, 3.6 percent of alcohol-related accidents were fatal. Another 11.9 percent of alcohol-related accidents resulted in serious injury.
- The highest percentage of alcohol-related crashes occurred over weekends in 2007. Saturdays and Sundays together accounted for 45.9 percent of all alcohol-related crashes. Additionally, 50.9 percent of fatal alcohol-related crashes occurred on the weekends. Late-night hours accounted for the highest numbers of crashes; 47.5 percent of alcohol-related crashes occurred between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. (25 percent of the day).
- Most fatal alcohol-related crashes, 69.5 percent, were single-vehicle crashes. Fatal crashes involving 2 vehicles made up 22.4 percent, while 8.1 percent involved 3 or more vehicles.
- Males made up 72.7 percent of drivers involved in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents in 2007. Males between the ages of 21 and 24 made up 14.4 percent of drinking drivers involved in crashes, and males aged 25-29 made up an additional 12.6 percent. Among both sexes, the frequency of involvement in alcohol-related crashes decreased with age. Persons aged 21-29 made up 30.2 percent of those killed or injured in alcohol-related crashes. There were 49 fatalities under the age of 21.
