Types of Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma
The pleural is a thin layer of tissue that lines and protects the lungs and interior wall of the chest cavity. This tissue secretes a small amount of fluid that acts as a lubricant, allowing the lungs to move smoothly in the chest cavity. Pleural Mesothelioma affects the chest and heart lining. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing and pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid between the layers of the chest lining). Severe complications can develop when a pleural effusion places pressure on surrounding organs.

Pleural Mesothelioma accounts for nearly 80% of all cases of this type of cancer. This disease is caused by direct or indirect exposure to asbestos. Pleural Mesothelioma is different from lung cancer in that it targets the lining of the lung rather than the lung itself.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
The peritoneum is the tissue that lines and protects the abdominal wall and covers most of the organs in the abdomen. Peritoneum Mesothelioma infects the abdominal and stomach lining. Symptoms include stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal swelling. These symptoms can become quite severe when swelling of the membrane surrounds the abdomen.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is not very common, as it only occurs in 10% to 20% of all the Mesothelioma cases. If the disease is diagnosed early, it is possible to treat it with radiation or chemotherapy. This disease is caused by direct or indirect exposure to asbestos.
