Mesothelioma Risk Factors

It is estimated that up to 80% of all Mesothelioma cases are caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a natural mineral that is mined and made into tiny fibers that are as strong as steel but can be woven like cotton. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles and insulation. When asbestos is moved or damaged, it releases tiny particles that can get into the lungs and cause inflammation, a buildup of scar tissue and sometimes cancer.

The people most likely to have been exposed to asbestos include construction workers, plumbers, electricians, boilermakers and other professionals working in the trades. Those who worked or lived in buildings where asbestos was present are most at risk for developing this kind of cancer as well. The risk of asbestos-related disease increases with heavier and extended periods of exposure.

More about Asbestos
The National Cancer Institute states that "asbestos has been mined and used commercially since the late 1800s, with its peak usage occurring during World War II. Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos dust. Initially, the risks associated with exposure were not completely understood. However, an increased risk of developing Mesothelioma was later found among shipyard workers, people who work in asbestos mines and mills, producers of asbestos products, workers in the heating and construction industries and other tradespeople". Today, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets limits for acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the workplace. Proper protective measures must now be taken by those who are at risk of exposure.

There is evidence showing that family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing Mesothelioma as well. This risk is a result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on the clothing and hair of exposed workers.
