Children and TBI's

Children who suffer head traumas should be watched closely for warning signs of TBIs. They can exhibit similar symptoms as adults and loved ones should also keep a close watch for:

  • Changes in play activities and school behavior
  • Fatigue and irritability
  • Inattention or inability to focus
  • Loss of balance
  • Loss of new skills (shoe-lace tying, potty training)
  • Changes in eating or sleeping habits

As in adults, these symptoms could be indicators of many health issues. When experienced by a child who has recently suffered a head trauma, they can indicate a traumatic brain injury. In some instances these symptoms can get progressively worse. A child that suffers a head trauma and cannot stop crying, or will not nurse or eat, could be displaying symptoms of a more severe TBI. Immediate medical aid should be sought in these instances.
