Who is Affected?

Traumatic brain injuries affect one and a half million Americans every year. Annually, 50,000 Americans die from the effects of their TBIs, making the fatality rate near 22%. The CDC estimates that 5.3 million Americans are currently living with a disability that is related to a traumatic brain injury. Anyone who experiences a head trauma can suffer a TBI, although some age groups are more at risk than others.

The rate of traumatic brain injury occurrences is highest for children (0-14 years), young adults and adults over the age of 75. Children alone account for 3,000 TBI-related deaths and 29,000 TBI-related hospitalizations annually. Young men are especially at risk for TBIs: almost three quarters of all TBI-sufferers are male, and nearly half of those are men between the ages of 15-34.

The causes of TBIs vary by age. Vehicular accidents are the leading cause for 5-64 year olds, while falls are the leading cause for those 65 or older.

It is important to note that falls and other accidents can often be established as the result of the negligence of other parties. If it can be proven that another party is responsible for the accident, then a legal claim for damages can be pursued.
