Damage from TBI's

The damages that result from traumatic brain injuries (TBI's) range widely depending on the location and extent of the brain injuries. These damages can be physical, emotional and cognitive in nature. It is important to note that, although not as obvious as physical injuries, emotional and cognitive impairments can prove even more damaging to a patient. These damages can completely alter the lives of both the patients and their families, as work, normal social relations and day-to-day activities become difficult challenges.

  • Cognitive damages - Difficulties and impairments in mental functions. These can include problems with memory, judgment, perception or concentration, as well as difficulties with language and communication. The Mayo clinic has released a report demonstrating a link between TBIs and Parkinson's disease: patients who suffer a moderate to severe head trauma had an 11-times greater risk of developing Parkinson's later in life.
  • Physical damages - Even minor TBIs can result in physical damage like dizziness, disorientation and frequent headaches. More serious TBIs can result in reduced strength and coordination (balance and fine motor skill disorders) and reduction or loss of one's senses like touch, sight, taste and hearing.
  • Emotional damages - The emotional consequences of TBIs can include depression, anxiety, mood swings, sexual dysfunction and even personality changes (more aggressive, more argumentative, etc.).

The economic consequences of TBIs should not be ignored. In addition to the costs associated with medical services and physical/cognitive rehabilitation, the TBI sufferer may not be able to earn a living, even after undergoing treatment. This loss of income, as a result of a TBI, can be devastating to a family and can be claimed in a legal action.
