UM/SUM Insurance
Auto insurance is not something most people focus on. Once you have it, you're set, right? Maybe not. Think about this: You're injured in a car accident as a result of another driver's negligence. You then file a claim against that vehicle's insurance carrier to recover for damages like pain and suffering.
But what happens if the other vehicle isn't insured at all? Or if the other vehicle's insurance coverage isn't enough to compensate you for your damages? That's where UM/SUM coverage comes in. UM/SUM, which stands for Uninsured/Supplemental Underinsured Motorist coverage, protects you and family members from motorists who either don't have coverage or whose coverage limits are too low to compensate you for damages.
All New York State motorists are required to have a minimum amount of UM/SUM coverage, usually $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident. But is that really enough? Most insurance companies won't tell you this, but your UM/SUM coverage should be equal to your regular liability coverage.
If your policy covers other drivers up to $100,000 in case you cause damage, why should you be at risk from a driver covered only up to $25,000? It doesn't cost much to increase your UM/SUM coverage (in fact, it's the least expensive insurance in NY State)!
With a few simple changes to your existing auto insurance policy, you can close the gaps in your coverage and protect yourself and your family. If you're unsure whether you have UN/SUM coverage, or how much coverage you have, call us with your policy and dec sheet and we will be happy to help.
