C-HRT Causes Cancer

The Link Between Combination Hormone Replacement Therapy and Breast Cancer

In order to test the effect of HRT on the prevention of coronary heart disease, as well as osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapies were made part of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI is a massive study of more than 167,000 women nationwide, designed to investigate various different aspects of women's health over a 15-year span. It is considered the "gold standard" in random clinical testing. 16,000 women participated in the combination hormone therapy portion of the trials, taking both and Provera or a combination drug like Prempro. This portion of the trial was designed to last eight years.

In the Spring of 2002, the National Institute of Health (NIH) stopped the study with more than three years remaining. On July 9, 2002, the NIH published its shocking findings: combination hormone replacement therapies were putting women at increased risk of serious diseases. These risks include:
  • 26% increase in breast cancer
  • 41% increase in strokes
  • 29% increase in heart attacks
  • 100% increase in blood clots
  • 22% increase in heart disease
Conclusion: "The results indicate that this regiment should not be initiated or continued."

The NIH stopped the study because it found that the potential risks of combination hormone replacement therapy outweighed any potential benefits, and that it would be unethical to continue to expose the clinical subjects to these risks.

In England, a new study called the Million Woman Study was undertaken to investigate the effects of combination hormone replacement therapy on breast cancer. The study involved more than one million women and published preliminary findings in August of 2003. Again, the findings were shocking:

The study found a 200% greater chance of developing breast cancer while using combination hormone replacement therapy.

The findings stated that "20,000 extra cases of breast cancer are estimated to have occurred over the past ten years among women aged 50-64 as a result of their use of hormone replacement therapy". The study also stated that an additional 15-20,000 cases of breast cancer could be attributed to combination hormone replacement therapy.

The numbers are incredibly troubling when one considers the differences in population and the usage rate of combination hormone replacement therapy between England and the United States. It can be estimated that there have been over 100,000 excess breast cancer cases in the United States in the last ten years that can be attributed directly to combination hormone replacement therapy.

Most disturbingly, a January 2003 report from the University of Washington states that combination hormone replacement therapy is probably responsible for all of the increase in breast cancers in the United States since at least 1992.
