Sudden Hearing Loss

The FDA announced on October 22nd, 2007 that the popular erectile dysfunction medications Viagra, Levitra and Cialis have been linked to sudden temporary hearing loss in over two dozen patients.

The FDA found a total of 29 reports of sudden hearing loss, both with and without accompanying vestibular symptoms (dizziness), in direct association with dosing of Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. In one third of the cases the hearing loss was temporary, the agency said, the remaining cases were described as ongoing at the time of the report of the outcome had not been described.

Due to these report findings, the FDA has already approved label changes for all three drugs. These new warning labels follow a 2005 label change noting cases of sudden vision loss and other serious side effects.

About 30 million men have taken Viagra since its approval in 1998 as the first widely-used drug for erectile dysfunction, according to the drugs' manufacturer Pfizer.
