Asbestos Exposure
A history of asbestos exposure is reported to be linked to nearly 80 percent of all Mesothelioma cases. For nearly a half century, companies manufacturing goods that contain asbestos have known about the serious health risks associated with this product, however due to their "corporate profits over people" philosophy, nothing was done until it was too late.
Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally as strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads or woven. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products including textiles, friction products, insulation and other building materials. The risks associated with exposure occur during the manufacturing process, when asbestos particles float in the air and can be inhaled or swallowed.
The Mesothelium is the membrane that covers and protects most of the body's internal organs. The National Cancer Institute defines Mesothelioma as "a disease in which cells of the Mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order." Symptoms of Mesothelioma can surface from 10 to 50 years after the initial exposure took place. Side effects (depending upon what part of the body is infected) include: shortness of breath, chest pain, weight loss, abdominal pain and swelling, bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever. It is estimated that 75% of the cases start in the chest cavity (pleural mesotheliomas). Another 10% to 20% begin in the abdomen (peritoneal mesotheliomas).
Although Mesothelioma is considered a very serious and potentially fatal disease, it is rare. The majority of the nearly 2,000 new cases reported each year are in males. Current treatments include radiation, chemotherapy or surgery.
