Seroquel

Seroquel (Quetiapine) is a popular drug used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder including: delusions, thought disorder, hallucinations, confusion, social withdrawal, apathy and a reduced ability to express emotion. The drug, which is manufactured by pharmaceutical powerhouse AstraZeneca, has recently been linked to severe cases of diabetes and other unusual side effects.

Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication that works by changing the way chemicals in the brain operate. Various severe side effects from using the drug have been reported including diabetes, uncontrollable movements of the mouth, tongue, cheeks, jaws, arms, or legs (known as Tardive dyskinesia), difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue and face, and hives.

ALERT:  There have been numerous reports of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) caused by the use of Seroquel.  This very serious condition is characterized by convulsions (seizures), difficult or unusually fast breathing, high or low blood pressure, loss of bladder control, unusually pale skin, sweating, severe muscle stiffness and rigidity, confusion and a fast or irregular heart beat.

Additional, less severe side effects from Seroquel include dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, constipation, dry mouth, abdominal pain, abnormal vision, decrease in appetite, decreased strength and energy, increased muscle tone, increased sweating, suffy or runny nose, indigestion and weight gain.

A 2003 study reported that Seroquel patients had 3.3 times as many cases of type 2 diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders (compared to alternative atypical antipsychotic mediations).  The FDA released a MedWatch safety alert outlining the increase risk of hyperglycemia as a result of the study.
