Permax

Permax (Pergolide Mesylate) is a medication used to treat Parkinson's disease (a disorder of the nervous system that causes difficulties with muscle control, movement and balance) and Restless Leg Syndrome. The drug's manufacturer, Armin Pharmaceuticals, was recently ordered by the FDA to remove Permax from the market based on findings that the medication causes severe cardiovascular damage.

Two studies recently published by The New England Journal of Medicine confirm earlier reports that the medication is responsible for an increased chance of serious damage to heart valves, potentially resulting in the patient's death. Due to this information and because of the availability of alternative treatments for Parkinson’s disease and Restless Leg Syndrome that do not propose the same risks, the companies that manufacture and sell Permax as Pergolide have stopped shipping and distributing the drug and are advising health care officials on how to treat patients who currently undergo Permax treatment.

Heart valves are one of the most important parts of the heart. These "seals" prevent the backflow of blood through the chambers inside the heart during circulation. If the valves fail and do not seal properly during pumping it can cause blood to regurgitate through the heart and cause obvious, serious health complications. This in turn can increase the workload on the heart and can lead to heart failure if left untreated if even for a short period of time.

Permax was approved for distribution in the US in 1989 and has since been prescribed to upwards of half a million people.
