Merck's Vioxx not cause of patient's death - jury

Last Updated: 2007-03-27 13:11:16 -0400 (Reuters Health)

EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois (Reuters) - An Illinois jury on Tuesday found Merck & Co. Inc.'s withdrawn arthritis drug Vioxx did not cause a 52-year-old woman's fatal heart attack and that the drugmaker adequately warned consumers about the drug's alleged dangers.

The jury awarded no damages to the plaintiff in the case.

Plaintiff Frank Schwaller sued Merck after his wife, Patricia, took Vioxx for 20 months for shoulder pain before dying from a heart attack in August 2003.
