New York City Motor Vehicle Accidents 2007

  • There were 79,510 motor vehicle accidents in New York City in 2007.  The total includes 26,535 accidents causing property damage, 52,711 personal injury accidents, and 264 fatal accidents.
  • The 79,510 total vehicle accidents included 11,035 collisions with pedestrians.  Approximately half of those who were fatally injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2007 were pedestrians.  An additional 10,859 pedestrians were injured in collisions.
  • There were nearly 3,000 collisions with bicyclists in 2007.  That includes 25 accidents in which the bicyclist was fatally injured.  Bicyclists made up just over 9 percent of fatalities.  There were 2,865 injuries to bicyclists.
  • Human factors were reported in 30,458 of the 79,520 vehicle accidents in 2007.  The most common human factors reported were distracted driving (involved in 19 percent of accidents), following too closely (8.6 percent), and failure to yield right of way (9.2 percent). 
  • Most drivers involved in accidents in NYC were male (64.6 percent).  Drivers aged 25-39 were involved in vehicle accidents in the highest numbers, although drivers aged 21-24 were involved in the highest number of fatal accidents.  Persons in their twenties also made up the highest proportion of fatalities.
  • Only 5.6 percent of all persons involved in vehicle accidents were known to be using no restraint at the time of the accident.  However, one third of those who were fatally injured were not using a restraint.  About 66 percent of those who were wearing a lap belt and harness at the time of an accident were uninjured, compared with 58 percent of those who were not using a restraint.  Half of the bicyclists killed in 2007 were not wearing a helmet.
