New York Work Zone Accident Statistics
- There were 835 work zone fatalities in the U.S. in 2007. This represents 2.0% of all roadway fatalities for the year.
- Over 85 percent of those killed in work zones are motor vehicle drivers or occupants. Over 40,000 additional nonfatal injuries are caused by work zone crashes each year.
- According to the Federal Highway Administration, work zone fatalities have increased nearly 40% from 1997 to 2005.
- Half of all fatal work zone crashes occurred during the day. Over twice as many fatal work zone crashes occurred on weekdays versus weekends.
- Fatal work zone crashes occurred most frequently in the summer and fall.
- Approximately 25% of work zone accidents involved large trucks.
- In the state of New York, there were 605 crashes in DOT work zones in 2005. Those crashes resulted in 17 fatalities and 220 injuries. In 2005, 8 DOT workers were injured in work zone crashes. In 2006, there were 7 fatalities and 139 injuries due to vehicle intrusions into DOT work zones.
- On average, 24 intrusions into work zones are reported within New York City limits every year.
