New York State – Large Truck Accident Statistics
- There were 13,793 motor vehicle accidents involving large trucks in the state of New York in 2007. Large truck accidents resulted in 8,646 property damage accidents, 5,019 personal injury accidents, and 128 fatal accidents. Large truck accidents included 263 collisions with pedestrians, 62 collisions with bicyclists, and 54 collisions with motorcyclists.
- Large truck accidents resulted in 146 fatalities in 2007. Large truck drivers represented just 21 of those deaths. There were also 71 drivers of other types of vehicles, 31 passengers, 19 pedestrians, and 4 bicyclists killed. Fatal accidents made up 1.0 percent of large truck accidents in 2007.
- The majority of large truck accidents occur during the day. Approximately 80 percent of large truck accidents in 2007 occurred between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Large truck accidents were also much more frequent on weekdays than on Saturdays or Sundays.
- Accidents involving large trucks occurred most frequently on state routes, the site of 30.3 percent of accidents. Another 28.4 percent of accidents occurred on municipal streets. Most large truck accidents, 77.1 percent, involved a large truck and one other vehicle.
- About 77 percent of large truck accidents were reported to involve a human factor. Commonly reported human factors included distracted driving (18.8 percent of accidents), failure to yield right of way (10.9 percent), and following too closely (12.9 percent). Slippery pavement contributed to over 10 percent of large truck accidents.
- Large truck drivers involved in accidents in 2007 were 93.7 percent male. Males also represented 57.6 percent of non-large truck drivers involved in accidents with large trucks.
